About the Science for Development Summit 2026

Science in Service of Nation-Building

The Science for Development Summit 2026 is a flagship international initiative of the Presidency of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

At a pivotal moment in the country’s development journey, the Summit positions science, research, and innovation as central pillars of nation-building. It convenes Nobel Laureates, world-renowned scientists, policymakers, academic institutions, development partners, and youth leaders to explore how scientific knowledge can translate into real-world development outcomes.

For Timor-Leste — one of the world’s youngest nations — investing in human capital, education, and global partnerships is essential to building a resilient and diversified future.

Why this Summit Matters

Small states can think big. This Summit demonstrates that Timor-Leste is ready to engage at the highest levels of global scientific dialogue.

The Summit reflects three core ambitions:

  • Inspiring the Next Generation – Encouraging Timorese youth to pursue careers in science, technology, medicine, engineering, and research.

  • Strengthening Global Partnerships – Building lasting relationships between Timorese institutions and leading international universities and research centres.

  • Promoting Evidence-Based Policy – Supporting development strategies grounded in research, data, and innovation.
